Minecraft Enchanting Table: Recipe & Level 30 Setup

You drop a diamond sword into your Minecraft enchanting table and the best option says level 8. A table with no bookshelves never offers more than that.

The fix is one build. Surround your Minecraft enchanting table with 15 bookshelves, and the bottom option jumps to level 30. You need level 30 to pick it, yet it only costs 3 levels and 3 lapis lazuli. To make the table itself, craft 1 book, 2 diamonds and 4 obsidian.

This guide gives you the exact bookshelf layout, the real costs and quick fixes for when the table refuses to work. It also covers what changes between Java and Bedrock.

How to Make an Enchanting Table in Minecraft

To make a Minecraft enchanting table, craft 1 book, 2 diamonds and 4 obsidian at a crafting table. The recipe needs the 3x3 grid, so the 2x2 inventory grid will not work.

Shopping list: 3 sugar cane, 1 leather, 2 diamonds and 4 obsidian. If you do not own a diamond pickaxe yet, add 3 more diamonds and 2 sticks.

The book sits at the top. The two diamonds flank the center obsidian. The bottom row is all obsidian. Result slot empty? Check the book first. It must sit in the top middle slot. Then make sure the diamonds and obsidian are not swapped.

Older guides call the Minecraft enchanting table the enchantment table. Java Edition renamed it in 1.13 and Bedrock followed in 1.21.30. The block and the recipe are the same.

Where to get each ingredient

Book. Craft it from 3 paper and 1 leather. Paper comes from sugar cane, and 3 sugar cane make 3 paper. Cows and horses drop leather.

Diamonds. You need 2 for the table. Diamonds are most common around Y=-59, but lava is common there too. Many players mine at Y=-54 for a safer margin.

Obsidian. Pour water onto a still lava source to create it. Flowing lava turns into cobblestone instead, so make sure the water hits a source block. Only a diamond or netherite pickaxe collects obsidian. On Java Edition, an unenchanted diamond pickaxe takes about 9.4 seconds per block, so four blocks take around 40 seconds. Efficiency cuts that time sharply.

Diamond pickaxe. No pickaxe yet? Craft one from 3 diamonds and 2 sticks. In that case you need 5 diamonds in total.

With your enchanting table crafted the next step matters even more.  Surround it with bookshelves so it can offer level 30.

How the Minecraft Enchanting Table Works

The Minecraft enchanting table spends experience levels and lapis lazuli to give an item random enchantments. You pick one of three options. Bookshelves decide how strong those options are.

How to enchant an item:

  1. Open the table.

  2. Put your item in the item slot and lapis lazuli in the lapis slot.

  3. Hover over (or tap) an option to preview one enchantment it will give. The rest stay hidden.

  4. Pick an option and take your enchanted item.

What each option costs

Each option shows a level requirement and a lapis cost. You need the full level requirement to pick it, but you pay much less.

With 15 bookshelves, the bottom option is level 30. It asks for level 30, yet it only takes 3 levels and 3 lapis.

Here is an example. You have level 31 and 5 lapis. You pick the level 30 option. You finish with level 28, 2 lapis and an enchanted item.

What do you actually get

The result is random. A higher requirement usually brings more or stronger enchantments, but it guarantees nothing. A level 30 roll can still give a single enchantment such as Fortune II.

The item must also be clean which means it has no enchantments yet. The table ignores items that already have one.

What do you need before you start

Levels: Reaching level 30 from zero takes 1,395 experience points in total.

Lapis lazuli: You can drop in a full stack. The table only uses what the option needs. Lapis is most common around Y=0 and our Minecraft ore levels guide shows where to dig for it.

Bookshelves:You need 15 for the level 30 option. The next section shows how to place them.

Enchanting Table Bookshelf Setup for Level 30

For a level 30 enchanting table setup, surround the table with 15 bookshelves. The easiest way is a square ring with one gap, so you can still walk in.

Build this ring and keep every clear cell empty. The green cell is your entrance. Bookshelves raise the level requirement of each option, which improves the offers. The table counts up to 15 shelves. Extra shelves do nothing.

The three rules

A shelf only counts when it follows all three:

  • Distance: It sits exactly 2 blocks from the table along one direction and up to 2 blocks along the other. A ring 2 blocks out meets this rule.

  • Height: It sits at the table's height or one block higher.

  • Clear space: The space between the table and the shelf is empty. Torches and most other blocks break the link.

How to build it

  1. Place the table where you want your enchanting corner.

  2. Count 2 blocks out in every direction from the table.

  3. Fill that ring with bookshelves but skip one cell so you can walk in.

  4. Open the table with an item inside. The bottom option should read level 30.

If the bottom option shows less than 30 some shelves are not counting. Check the distance, the height and the clear cells first.

How the level requirement grows

More shelves push each option higher. These ranges come from the Minecraft Wiki.

Fifteen shelves lock the bottom option at level 30. That makes the bottom option a handy test for your build.

What 15 bookshelves cost

Each bookshelf takes 6 planks and 3 books. Fifteen shelves therefore need 90 planks and 45 books. The books alone mean 135 paper and 45 leather.

Strongholds contain libraries full of bookshelves. Break them with a Silk Touch tool to keep the blocks.

Chiseled bookshelves do not work. They look similar, but they add no enchanting power. Use regular bookshelves around the table.

Enchanting Table Not Working? Quick Fixes

If your enchanting table is not working, check these three things first. They solve most problems.

Check Your Levels, Lapis and Item

You need the full level requirement shown on the option, not just its small cost. The level 30 option costs only 3 levels but you must be at level 30 to pick it. You also need 1, 2 or 3 lapis lazuli for the top, middle or bottom option. Finally, the item must be compatible with the table and have no enchantments yet.

Check Your Bookshelves

With 15 correctly placed bookshelves, the table offers a level 30 enchantment as the bottom option. If you see a lower number, some shelves are not counting. Each one must sit exactly 2 blocks from the table, at table height or one block higher with empty space in between.

Chiseled bookshelves add nothing. Don’t rely on the glyph particles, since they can fly in from shelves that don’t count. Count your shelves instead.

Getting Weak Enchantments? How to Refresh the Offers

Weak offers are normal, because the results are random. Before you spend levels and lapis on your best gear, enchant a cheap item or a book. The table then rolls new offers.

What You Can and Cannot Enchant

The enchanting table works on the items below, as long as they have no enchantments yet:

  • Pickaxes, shovels, axes and hoes

  • Swords, spears, bows, crossbows, maces and tridents

  • Fishing rods

  • All armor pieces

  • Books

Spears are only available in newer versions of the game. Some items cannot be enchanted at the table at all, including shears, shields, elytra and flint and steel.

You can only enchant them at an anvil with an enchanted book. Some enchantments never appear at the table either. Mending, Frost Walker and the two curses are not on its list.

You can find Mending and Frost Walker through loot, fishing or villager trades. A book enchanted at the table carries only one enchantment. To build a full set, merge several books at an anvil.

Tips for Better Enchantments

Refresh the offers cheaply. The options stay the same until you enchant something, and taking the item out and putting it back changes nothing. Enchant a book with the cheapest option (1 level and 1 lapis) and the table rolls new offers.

Build with books. Enchant several books then merge the best ones onto your gear at an anvil. This way you keep only the enchantments you actually want.

Top up your levels. If you are a few levels short a few Bottles o’ Enchanting can close the gap. If you enchant often a proper XP farm saves hours of grinding.

Fix a weak result. If a roll disappoints a grindstone can strip the enchantments and give back some XP. It does not remove curses and the lapis is gone for good. Move your enchanting table safely. Mine it with any pickaxe to pick it up. Without a pickaxe it drops nothing.

Java vs Bedrock Differences

The core Minecraft enchanting table rules are the same in both editions. These are the main differences:

  • Clear space: In Java, the block between the table and a shelf can be air, snow or short grass. In Bedrock, it must be air at both the table’s height and the block above it.

  • Waterlogging: You can waterlog the enchanting table in Bedrock, but not in Java.

  • Available enchantments: Sweeping Edge appears at the table in Java only. Thorns on helmets, leggings and boots appears in Bedrock only.

What the Strange Text on the Enchanting Table Means

The glowing symbols on each option are written in the Standard Galactic Alphabet. They look like a secret message but they are purely decorative and do not reveal your enchantment. To get a hint, hover over (or tap) an option. It shows one of the enchantments you will get.

Conclusion

A Minecraft enchanting table is easy to craft with 1 book, 2 diamonds and 4 obsidian. For a level 30 enchanting table setup, place 15 regular bookshelves around it with one empty block in between.

The level 30 option is the bottom one. You need level 30 to pick it but it only costs 3 levels and 3 lapis lazuli.

If your enchanting table is not working, check your levels, lapis, item and bookshelf spacing first. If the offers look weak, enchant a cheap book to refresh them before using your best gear.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many bookshelves do you need for level 30 in Minecraft?

You need 15 bookshelves. Place them 2 blocks from the table, with one empty block in between, at table height or one block higher. Extra shelves add nothing.

How much does a level 30 enchantment cost?

You need to be at level 30 to pick it, but it only costs 3 levels and 3 lapis lazuli. In the example above, a player at level 31 ends up at level 28.

Why is my enchanting table not showing level 30?

Some of your bookshelves are not counting. Check three things: every shelf has an empty block between it and the table, every shelf is at table height or one block higher, and you are using regular bookshelves. A torch or any other block in the gap breaks the link.

Do chiseled bookshelves work with an enchanting table?

No. Chiseled bookshelves look similar but add no enchanting power. Use regular bookshelves.

Can you get Mending from an enchanting table?

No. Mending is not on the table’s list. You can find it through loot, fishing or villager trades.
