Minecraft Redstone Lamp Recipe: How to Make, Power & Use

The Minecraft redstone lamp recipe is easy to remember. Put a glowstone block in the middle of the crafting grid  then add one redstone dust on each side of it: top, bottom, left and right. You get one lamp.

What makes a lamp special is that it stays dark until you power it. Flip a lever and it glows at light level 15  the brightest in the game. Flip it back and the light goes out. That makes it a great fit for ceilings, street lights and any room you switch off at night.

There is one snag that catches many first time builders. You place the lamp, wire it up and nothing happens. Nine times out of ten the dust is pointing the wrong way, and it takes five seconds to fix.

Below, you’ll find the full Minecraft redstone lamp recipe, five ways to power a lamp and fixes for a lamp that won’t light. You’ll also see how lamps compare with lanterns, glowstone and copper bulbs. Everything works on Java and Bedrock unless noted.

Redstone Lamp Recipe: How to Make a Redstone Lamp in Minecraft

You need two ingredients:

  • 1 glowstone block

  • 4 redstone dust

Open a crafting table and put the glowstone block in the center slot. Place one redstone dust in the top, bottom, left and right slots. Leave the four corners empty.

The recipe is shaped, so your layout has to match this grid exactly. Take the lamp from the result slot. One craft gives you one lamp.

An easy slip in the Minecraft redstone lamp recipe is using glowstone dust instead of a block. Dust is what you collect in the Nether, so craft four dust into a block first. Counting that step one lamp costs four glowstone dust and four redstone dust.

Where to Get the Ingredients?

Both ingredients in the Minecraft redstone lamp recipe come from deep parts of the world, so bring a good pickaxe.

Glowstone block

Craft one from four glowstone dust. Glowstone grows in clusters on Nether cave ceilings and breaking it drops the dust. Mine it with Silk Touch and you get the glowstone block itself, so you skip the crafting step.

Redstone dust

Mine redstone ore deep underground. It generates below Y=16 and is most common around Y=-59. One ore usually drops 4 to 5 dust, which covers the redstone for about one lamp. Our Minecraft ore levels guide shows the best depths for redstone and other ores.

A Fortune pickaxe gives you more dust from both materials, which helps when you plan to build many lamps.

You may not need to craft a lamp at all. Redstone lamps also generate in the hidden redstone rooms of ancient cities in the deep dark.

How Does a Redstone Lamp Work?

Minecraft redstone lamp showing the difference between an unlit and lit redstone lamp

A redstone lamp lights up only while it gets a redstone signal. Power it and it glows at light level 15 the brightest in the game. Cut the power and it goes dark.

That sets it apart from a torch lantern or glowstone which shines all the time. With a lamp you decide when the light is on.

The dark state has one catch. An unlit lamp gives no light, so the area around it can get dark enough for hostile mobs to spawn. Mobs can even spawn on top of the lamp itself. Keep another light source nearby if you switch lamps off in a room you use.

The lamp is also a solid block, so it blocks the skylight. When you break it, it drops itself and you can place it again.

How to Power a Redstone Lamp?

A lamp turns on the moment it gets a redstone signal and five setups can send one. If you are not sure where to start, use a lever.

1. Use a Lever

A lever is the easiest way to switch a lamp by hand.

  1. Place the lamp.

  2. Attach a lever to the side of the lamp.

  3. Flip the lever on. The lamp lights up.

  4. Flip it off to turn the lamp off.

A lever stays on until you flip it, so it suits bedrooms, entrances and storage rooms. A button works the same way but it sends only a short pulse. The lamp turns off again by itself.

2. Use Redstone Dust

Dust carries power from a switch to lamps that are farther away. Lay the dust so it points toward the lamp or runs across the top of it. Dust that points away from the lamp will not power it.

One switch can run a whole row of lamps this way. A signal fades after 15 blocks of dust, so add a repeater on longer lines.

3. Use a Redstone Torch

A redstone torch powers the block above it. Place the torch on the ground and put the lamp directly above it. A torch attached to the side of the lamp does not power it.

A torch also flips a signal. It turns off when the block it sits on gets power. Use that to build a lamp that goes dark when you flip a switch on.

4. Use a Redstone Block

A redstone block gives constant power. Place one next to the lamp and the lamp stays lit. Remove the block to turn the lamp off.

You need no dust and no switch. Hide the block behind a wall or above a ceiling and the lamp looks like it glows on its own.

5. Use a Repeater, Comparator or Daylight Sensor

A powered repeater or comparator that faces the lamp will light it. A daylight sensor next to the lamp works too and it is the base of the automatic night light later in this guide. These parts matter more in bigger redstone builds than in a single lamp.

How to Keep a Redstone Lamp Always On?

A lamp stays lit as long as it gets power, so you only need a signal that never turns off. Two setups do this.

  • Redstone block: Place one next to the lamp. It gives constant power with no wiring and you can hide it behind a wall or above a ceiling so the lamp seems to glow on its own.

  • Lever: Attach a lever to the lamp and leave it switched on. Choose this if you may want to turn the lamp off later because you can flip it without breaking anything.

For a whole room of always on lamps  use one redstone block per lamp. A single block only powers the lamps that touch it.

How to Make an Automatic Redstone Lamp?

Minecraft automatic redstone lamp using an inverted daylight sensor on a lamp post

An automatic lamp turns itself on at dusk and off at dawn. A daylight sensor makes this work, and the setup takes less than a minute.

  1. Place the lamp where you want the light.

  2. Place a daylight sensor in the open where it can see the sky. A roof above it blocks the reading.

  3. Interact with the sensor once to invert it. An inverted sensor sends power as the sky gets darker which is what you want for a night light.

  4. Connect the sensor to the lamp with redstone dust or place the sensor next to the lamp.

  5. Check the lamp at dusk or set the time to night with /time set night if cheats are on.

For a simple street light, place the inverted sensor on top of the lamp. For a long street run redstone dust from one sensor to a row of lamps, so a single sensor controls them all.

Redstone Lamp Not Working? Common Fixes

If your lamp stays dark, check these causes in order. The first two fix most cases.

The Dust Points Away From the Lamp

Minecraft redstone lamp wiring showing a powered lamp and an unpowered lamp

Redstone dust only powers a lamp when it points toward it or runs across the top of it. Dust that points away does nothing even if it is glowing red. Reroute the last piece of dust so it faces the lamp.

The Torch Is Attached to the Lamp

A redstone torch never powers the block it is attached to. If your torch sits on the side of the lamp, move it. Put the torch on the ground with the lamp directly above it or place it on a neighboring block that touches the lamp.

There Is a Gap in the Line

One missing piece of dust breaks the whole circuit. Walk the line from the switch to the lamp and look for a gap especially at corners and block edges.

The Signal Is Too Weak

A redstone signal fades after 15 blocks of dust. If your line is longer place a repeater to refresh the signal before it reaches the lamp.

The Lamp Stays Lit for a Moment

This is normal. A lamp turns on right away but takes a short time to turn off after the power stops. The delay is 4 game ticks (0.2 seconds) on Java and 6 game ticks (0.3 seconds) on Bedrock.

You will not notice it in a room or on a street. It matters in fast clocks and timed displays where a very quick signal can leave the lamp on.

Something Else Is Powering the Lamp

If the lamp will not turn off, look at the blocks around it. A redstone block, a powered block a torch or a daylight sensor next to the lamp can keep it lit. Remove or move the power source and the lamp goes dark.

Redstone Lamp vs Lantern vs Glowstone vs Copper Bulb

After the Minecraft redstone lamp recipe, the next question is whether a lamp is the right light for your build. The best choice depends on whether you need redstone control or constant light.

Lantern

Glowstone

Copper bulb

Redstone Lamp vs Lantern, Glowstone and Copper Bulb

All four light sources can reach light level 15, so brightness is not what separates them. Control is. The right pick depends on whether you want a light that switches or one that just stays on.

Redstone Lamp vs Lantern

A lantern is the simpler choice. It needs no redstone, and you can hang it from a ceiling or set it on the ground. Pick a lantern when you only want steady light.

Pick a redstone lamp when you want a switch a sensor or a circuit in charge. It is the better fit for a bedroom you want to darken or a street that lights up at night. If you want to see how lanterns work first, our guide on how to make a lantern in Minecraft covers the recipe and the best places to put one.

Redstone Lamp vs Glowstone

Glowstone gives the same light level 15 and costs less effort, but it never turns off. Use it for rooms and tunnels that should stay lit all the time.

Use a lamp when you need to switch the light off. A lamp is also the better pick for a build with a daylight sensor or a redstone circuit because glowstone cannot react to either.

Redstone Lamp vs Copper Bulb

A copper bulb behaves differently. It flips between on and off each time it gets a fresh redstone pulse, then keeps that state with no power at all. One press of a button turns it on and a second press turns it off. A lamp needs power the whole time it stays lit.

That makes a bulb the neater choice for a compact switch. It also gives you four bulbs from one craft, while a lamp gives you one.

The catch is oxidation. Left alone, a bulb gets dimmer as the copper ages dropping from light level 15 to 12, 8 and finally 4. Waxing the bulb with honeycomb stops the aging and keeps the light level where it is. A lamp never dims.

Redstone Lamp in Java vs Bedrock

The Minecraft redstone lamp recipe is identical on Java and Bedrock, and a lit lamp gives light level 15 on both.

The difference is how fast the lamp turns off.A lamp turns on right away on both editions. After the signal stops, it stays lit for a moment first:

Edition

Turn-off delay

Java

4 game ticks (0.2 seconds)

Bedrock

6 game ticks (0.3 seconds)

For room lighting or a street light, you will never notice. It matters in fast clocks flashing signals and lamp displays, where a very short pulse can leave the lamp lit instead of switching it off.

On Bedrock, very short pulses also behave differently, so test a fast circuit in your own edition before you build it big.

If you build on both editions, a circuit that works on Java may need a slower clock on Bedrock. Our Java vs Bedrock guide covers other differences that can change how a build works.

Redstone Lamp Build Ideas

A lamp gives you light on command, so it can mark a path, warn you of danger or finish off a room. These seven builds put that control to work.

Ceiling Lights

Set lamps into the ceiling and lay redstone blocks across the top of them. Every lamp lights up with no wiring, and the room looks clean from below.

If you want a switch, use redstone dust and a lever instead of the blocks.  The Minecraft ceiling designs guide shows beam panel and trim styles that frame the lamps well.

Circular Lamp Ring

Minecraft redstone lamp circle surrounding a stone fountain in a plaza

A ring of lamps suits a fountain, a plaza or the foot of a round tower. Mark the outline with the Minecraft circle generator, then place one lamp at an even gap around it.

Even spacing keeps the ring balanced from every side. Power it with redstone dust on top of the lamps or put a redstone block beside each lamp for constant light.

Hanging Chandelier

Lift a ring of lamps to the ceiling and hang it from chains. It makes a bright centerpiece for a hall or throne room. The Minecraft chandelier guide shows frame styles you can copy.

Street Lights

Minecraft village road with redstone lamp street lights glowing at night

Put a lamp on a post and place an inverted daylight sensor on top of it. The lamp turns on at dusk and off at dawn without a switch. Line the posts up along a road or village path, and the whole street lights itself.

Hidden Lighting

Place a lamp under a carpet. Carpet does not block light, so you see a soft glow but not the block. This looks good along a floor edge, beneath a staircase or inside a secret room.

Warning Lights

Wire a lamp to a redstone circuit to flash near a farm, door or entrance. It can show that a farm is running or warn you about a trap. Keep the blink slow. The turn-off delay can stop a very fast clock from switching the lamp off.

Cross Patterns

Arrange lamps in a cross and power each one from the same circuit. The result is a symmetrical pattern that works on floors, walls and ceilings. Test it in a creative world first, then copy it into your survival base.

Conclusion

The Minecraft redstone lamp recipe is one glowstone block in the center with four redstone dust around it. Crafting takes seconds. What makes a lamp worth having is the control it gives you because it stays dark until you decide to send it power.

A lever suits a room you switch by hand, a redstone block keeps a lamp glowing around the clock, and a daylight sensor lights a street at dusk without you lifting a finger. Pick the one that matches the build and you will rarely need anything more complex.

When a lamp refuses to light, the cause is usually small. Look at the direction of the dust first, then check for a torch stuck to the lamp then check whether a long line has let the signal fade. Fixing one of those three solves most dark lamps.

Start with a single lamp and a lever and see how it reacts to the switch. Once that feels easy, a street light or a ring of lamps is only a few more blocks away.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Minecraft redstone lamp recipe?

Put one glowstone block in the center of a crafting table and one redstone dust above, below, left and right of it. Leave the corners empty. You get one redstone lamp.

Do you need glowstone to make a redstone lamp?

Yes. The Minecraft redstone lamp recipe needs a glowstone block, which you craft from four glowstone dust. You can also find ready-made lamps in the hidden redstone rooms of ancient cities.

Is a redstone lamp brighter than glowstone?

No. A lit redstone lamp and glowstone both give light level 15. The difference is control, because a lamp switches off and glowstone does not.

Can you make a redstone lamp stay on permanently?

Yes. Place a redstone block next to the lamp, or attach a lever and leave it switched on. The lamp stays lit as long as it has power.

Why does my redstone lamp stay lit for a moment after I turn it off?

A lamp has a built in turn off delay. It lasts 0.2 seconds on Java and 0.3 seconds on Bedrock.
