Tinted glass in Minecraft lets you see through a wall without letting any light pass through it. That might sound like a small detail, but it makes a big difference when you are building a mob farm and want to watch mobs without letting light into the darkness inside.
It is also a great choice for underground bases, dark viewing rooms and modern builds with sleek, dark windows. Normal and stained glass both let light through but tinted glass blocks it completely while you can still see what is on the other side.
Crafting it is simple, but finding enough amethyst shards can take some effort. You will need to explore underground geodes and collect shards from fully grown amethyst clusters.
In this tinted glass Minecraft guide, you will learn how to craft it, how it works, how it compares with other glass blocks and where to use it. You will also find practical tips for collecting amethyst and calculating how much you need for your build.
How to Make Tinted Glass in Minecraft?
Tinted glass was added in the 1.17 Caves and Cliffs update. You can craft it in Survival mode in both Java Edition and Bedrock Edition and the tinted glass Minecraft recipe is the same in each. It needs just two ingredients.
Tinted Glass Minecraft Recipe
You need:
4 amethyst shards
1 glass block
1 crafting table
Follow these steps:
Open a crafting table to see the 3x3 grid.
Put the glass block in the center slot.
Place one amethyst shard in each slot above, below, left and right of the glass.
Leave all four corner slots empty.
Move the 2 tinted glass blocks from the result slot into your inventory.

If nothing appears in the result slot, check your layout. The most common mistakes are placing the glass off center or putting a shard in a corner.
Every craft of the tinted glass Minecraft recipe gives you 2 blocks, so a small batch of materials goes a long way. For example, 5 glass blocks and 20 amethyst shards make 10 tinted glass blocks.
How to Get Glass
No glass yet? Smelt sand in a furnace.
Collect sand from deserts, beaches or riverbeds. Red sand, found in badlands biomes, works too.
Put the sand in the top slot of a furnace and any fuel, such as coal or charcoal in the bottom slot.
Wait for the sand to smelt, then take the glass from the output slot.
Each sand block gives you 1 glass block. Smelting takes about 10 seconds per block, and one piece of coal smelts 8 items. So the 5 glass blocks you need for 10 tinted glass will use well under one piece of coal.
What Does Tinted Glass Do?
Tinted glass in Minecraft blocks light completely. Sunlight, torches, lanterns and glowstone cannot shine through it, even though you can still see through the glass.
Picture a torch inside a box made of tinted glass. You can see the torch from outside but the area around the box stays dark. Lanterns work the same way. If you want to build a few, check our guide on how to make a lantern in Minecraft.

A tinted glass wall does not make a whole room dark on its own. Light can still enter through open gaps, doors or other blocks that let light pass, so the rest of your build needs to be sealed too.
Does Tinted Glass Drop Itself?
Yes. You can break tinted glass with any tool or with your bare hand, and it always drops itself. You do not need a Silk Touch enchantment. Normal glass and stained glass work differently: they drop nothing at all unless you break them with a Silk Touch tool.
This matters because amethyst takes effort to collect. You can move a window rebuild a mob farm or redesign a wall without losing any of the tinted glass you already crafted.
Can Mobs Spawn on Tinted Glass?
No. Mobs cannot spawn on top of tinted glass, just like normal glass. That makes it a good choice for windows, walls and ceilings, but not for a spawning floor.
Tinted glass also does not cause suffocation damage, so mobs and players that get pushed into its space are not hurt by it.
Tinted Glass Minecraft vs Stained Glass vs Normal Glass
Tinted glass in Minecraft can look similar to black or gray stained glass, so players often confuse the two. However, they work differently, especially when it comes to blocking light.

Feature | Tinted Glass | Stained Glass | Normal Glass |
Recipe | 4 amethyst shards + 1 glass | 8 glass + 1 dye | Smelt sand |
Crafting output | 2 blocks | 8 blocks | 1 block per sand |
Blocks light | Yes, completely | No | No |
Drops itself | Yes, with any tool | Only with Silk Touch | Only with Silk Touch |
Pane version | No | Yes | Yes |
Colors | One dark tint (cannot be dyed) | 16 colors | Clear (can be crafted into stained glass) |
The biggest difference is light. Stained glass can change the color of a beacon beam, but it does not stop light. So if you want a dark room or a working mob farm, black stained glass will not help. It looks dark but light still passes straight through it.
When Should You Use Each One?
Tinted glass: when you need to see through a wall without letting light through, such as mob farm windows, dark viewing rooms and modern facades.
Stained glass: when you want color, patterns or a colored beacon beam.
Normal glass: for ordinary windows, greenhouses and anywhere you want a clear view and natural light.
Quick takeaway: choose tinted glass for darkness, stained glass for color and normal glass for brightness.
5 Best Uses for Tinted Glass in Minecraft
Tinted glass is most useful whenever you want to see into a space without letting light in or out. Here are the best ways to use it.
1. Mob Farms
Mob farms are one of the most popular uses for tinted glass. In a tinted glass Minecraft mob farm, hostile mobs spawn in the dark, so the farm has to stay unlit. Before tinted glass was available, checking the inside of a farm without letting light in could be difficult.

Darkness matters even more in recent versions. Since the 1.18 update, hostile mobs in Java Edition spawn only at block light level 0, so even a small light leak can stop a spawning room from working.
Because mobs cannot spawn on tinted glass, use it for walls, windows and ceilings rather than the spawning floor. For a full build to try, see our XP farm in Minecraft guide.
2. Mushroom Rooms
Tinted glass in Minecraft is useful for mushroom rooms because it lets you check the interior without allowing sunlight through the walls. It helps keep the room dark but make sure the setup meets the light conditions needed for your chosen mushroom and edition.
3. Modern Windows and Skyscrapers
Tinted glass makes a clean, dark window. Many builders pair it with concrete, stone or quartz for a sleek modern tower. For a skyscraper use it across several floors for a consistent dark facade and add contrasting pillars or horizontal bands to break up large surfaces.

Our Minecraft skyscraper guide shows how to plan one, and our Minecraft window designs article has 15 more ideas.
4. Dark Roofs and Domes
A tinted glass roof lets you see the sky while keeping daylight out. Our dome roof sizing guide explains how to plan the layers.

Keep one rule in mind: tinted glass blocks daylight, so add torches or lanterns inside any room with a tinted roof or windows. Without light, hostile mobs can spawn there.
5. Hidden Rooms and Viewing Chambers
Tinted glass is great for a secret lab a mob observation room or a display chamber inside a mountain base. Pair it with dark stone and concealed lighting so the glass blends into the wall. Remember that it is transparent, not invisible, players can still see through it and the glass itself stays visible as a block.
How to Get Amethyst Shards for Tinted Glass?
Amethyst is the hard part of the tinted glass minecraft recipe. You find it in amethyst geodes which generate underground in the Overworld, roughly between Y -58 and Y 30.
A geode has an outer shell of smooth basalt, then a layer of calcite. Inside are amethyst blocks and budding amethyst with buds and clusters growing from the budding blocks.

You can run into a geode while mining or exploring caves. If you spot smooth basalt or calcite underground, dig carefully because a geode may be hiding behind it. Our ore levels guide helps you pick depths for the trip.
How to Mine Amethyst Clusters?
Find a geode and break through the shell to enter its inner chamber.
Look for fully grown amethyst clusters on the budding amethyst blocks.
Mine each cluster with a pickaxe. Any pickaxe works, even a wooden one.
Collect the shards and leave the budding amethyst blocks alone.
Come back later to harvest new clusters as they grow.

Mine only fully grown clusters. With a pickaxe, each cluster drops 4 shards. Breaking it any other way drops only 2. Fortune can increase the amount. Smaller buds drop nothing unless you use Silk Touch. Also note that plain amethyst blocks do not drop shards so only clusters are worth mining for crafting.
Fortune or Silk Touch?
Fortune pickaxe: best for collecting extra shards for crafting.
Silk Touch pickaxe: best if you want the cluster block itself for decoration.
Regular pickaxe: gives the standard 4 shards per cluster.
Fortune and Silk Touch cannot be combined on the same tool through normal enchanting.
Why You Should Leave Budding Amethyst Alone
Budding amethyst blocks are what grow new buds and clusters, and you cannot pick them up as items in Survival mode. A bud grows through small, medium and large stages before it becomes a cluster, so the same geode can supply you again later.
If you break a budding block, that block is gone for good and will never grow clusters again. Write down the geode’s location so you can find it again. If you need help, see how to turn on coordinates in Java and Bedrock.
How Many Amethyst Shards Do You Need?
A fully grown amethyst cluster drops 4 shards when mined with a pickaxe without Fortune or Silk Touch. That is enough for one tinted glass recipe which produces 2 tinted glass blocks.
The formula is simple: tinted glass needed ÷ 2 = glass blocks needed and glass blocks needed × 4 = amethyst shards needed.
Tinted Glass Needed | Glass Blocks Needed | Amethyst Shards Needed | Clusters Needed (No Fortune) |
2 | 1 | 4 | 1 |
10 | 5 | 20 | 5 |
20 | 10 | 40 | 10 |
32 | 16 | 64 | 16 |
64 | 32 | 128 | 32 |
If you mine with a Fortune pickaxe, you will need fewer clusters than the table shows. For any big tinted glass minecraft build, planning your materials in advance helps you avoid repeated mining trips especially with a large mob farm or a full roof.
Tinted Glass Minecraft: Java vs Bedrock Differences
Tinted glass is in both editions, the recipe is the same, and the block does the same job: it blocks light while letting you see through.
However, mob spawning rules and some farm mechanics can differ, so a farm that works in one edition may need changes in the other. Test your design in your own edition before building big. Our Java vs Bedrock guide covers the main differences.
Conclusion
Tinted glass in Minecraft lets you see through walls while keeping light out, making it useful for mob farms, dark rooms and modern builds.
It is easy to craft, but collecting amethyst takes some effort. Plan your trip, mine only fully grown clusters with a pickaxe and leave the budding amethyst intact so the geode can keep producing new clusters.
Use tinted glass for mob farms, mushroom rooms and dark, modern builds. Choose stained glass when you want color and normal glass when you want a bright, open space. Now grab a pickaxe find a geode and craft your first batch.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you make tinted glass panes in Minecraft?
No. Vanilla Minecraft has no tinted glass pane, and you cannot craft one. Some mods add them, but they are not part of the base game. For a thin dark window, black or gray stained glass panes are the closest option, although they let light through. If blocking light matters use full tinted glass blocks instead.
Can you dye tinted glass?
No. Tinted glass cannot be dyed, and it only comes in one dark tint. If you want color, craft stained glass with 8 glass blocks and 1 dye. Keep in mind that stained glass does not block light.
Do you need Silk Touch to collect tinted glass?
No. Tinted glass drops itself when you break it with any tool or with your bare hand. Normal glass and stained glass, on the other hand drop nothing unless you use a Silk Touch tool.
Does tinted glass let sunlight through?
No. Tinted glass blocks all light, including sunlight, but you can still see the sky and the landscape through it. If you build a roof or windows with it, add torches or lanterns inside the room because the space will be dark.
Does tinted glass stop mobs from spawning?
Only on the glass itself. Mobs cannot spawn on top of tinted glass, but it does not stop them from spawning on other suitable blocks nearby. Since it blocks light a room behind tinted glass can stay dark enough for hostile mobs to spawn if the other spawning conditions are met.
