Minecraft Beacon Guide: Recipe, Pyramid, Effects & Range

A Minecraft beacon gives you free buffs like Speed, Haste or Regeneration while you stand near it. You need no potions and no fuel.

Build a pyramid, place the beacon on top, pay one ingot or gem to pick a power and it keeps working as long as the pyramid and the open sky above it stay in place.

The catch is the cost. Every beacon needs a Nether Star, and only the Wither boss drops one. A full pyramid also takes 164 mineral blocks, which is 1,476 ingots if you build it from iron.

This guide shows you how to craft a beacon, build the pyramid, pick the best effect and fix a beacon that stops working. It covers both Java and Bedrock Edition.

What Does a Beacon Do in Minecraft?

An active beacon does two things. It gives status effects to every player in range and it shoots a beam of light straight up into the sky.

The effects are why most players build one. You pick one primary power, such as Speed or Haste. A level 4 pyramid adds a secondary power, like Regeneration. Only players get these effects. Mobs and animals do not.

The beam works as a landmark. Use it to mark your base, a mine entrance or a meeting point on a busy server. The beacon block also gives off light level 15.

Because a beacon covers a fixed area, place it where you spend most of your time. Haste suits a mine, Speed suits a big base and Strength suits a mob farm. Treat it as a base item, not something you carry around.

How to Make a Beacon in Minecraft

To make a beacon in Minecraft, combine 5 glass, 3 obsidian and 1 Nether Star on a crafting table. That is the full Minecraft beacon recipe. Glass and obsidian are cheap. The Nether Star is the hard part, because only the Wither boss drops it.

The recipe is the same in Java and Bedrock Edition. Use plain glass, because stained glass does not work when you craft a beacon.

Smelt sand in a regular furnace to get glass. A blast furnace cannot smelt sand. For obsidian, pour water over a lava source block, then mine it with a diamond or netherite pickaxe.

How to Get a Nether Star in Minecraft

Only the Wither drops a Nether Star and it drops one per fight. To summon it, you need 3 Wither Skeleton Skulls and 4 blocks of soul sand or soul soil.

Wither Skeletons spawn in Nether fortresses. Turn on coordinates before you go, so you can find your way back. Each kill has only a 2.5% chance to drop a skull and Looting III raises it to 5.5%. A Wither Skeleton killed by a charged creeper explosion always drops a skull.

Place the soul blocks in a T shape: three in a row, with one under the middle. Put a skull on each block in the row. The third skull summons the Wither.

How to Prepare for the Wither Fight

Wear diamond or netherite armor and carry a Smite sword. At half health, the Wither becomes immune to arrows, so you will need the sword. Strength and Regeneration potions help too and you can find the recipes in our Minecraft potion chart. Milk removes the Wither effect, but it also removes your good potion effects.

Fight inside a stone tunnel far from your base, because the Wither breaks blocks and explodes after it spawns. Stay away from lava and open drops. A Nether Star that falls into the void is lost for good.

How to Build a Beacon Pyramid in Minecraft

A Minecraft beacon only works on top of a pyramid of mineral blocks. A full beacon pyramid has four layers (9×9, 7×7, 5×5 and 3×3) and uses 164 blocks.

The bigger it is, the longer the range and the more powers you unlock. Iron, gold, emerald, diamond and netherite blocks all work, and you can mix them freely. The type only changes the look. Coal, lapis, redstone and copper blocks do not count.

This is not the same as a regular Minecraft pyramid. Your top layer is 3×3, not a single block, so do not use that guide’s block counts here. You also do not need all four layers on day one. Nine blocks already make a working level 1 pyramid.

Minecraft Beacon Pyramid Levels and Block Counts

Every layer must be complete. One missing block lowers the level, so check each layer, corners included.

You can add layers later. The range updates by itself, and you do not need to reactivate the beacon.

How to Build a Beacon Pyramid Step by Step

Pick a flat spot with open sky above it. For a level 4 pyramid, clear a 9×9 area. Place the 9×9 base first (81 blocks) and find its center block before you go on. The beacon must sit right above it and counting to the middle now saves a rebuild.

Stack a centered 7×7 layer (49 blocks), then a 5×5 (25) and a 3×3 (9). Place the beacon on the middle block of the 3×3. If the sky is clear, the beam appears straight away. Testing in a creative world? The fill command can place a whole layer in one go.

How Much Does a Beacon Pyramid Cost?

Iron is the cheapest material. A full pyramid is 164 blocks, and each block takes 9 ingots, so you need 1,476 iron ingots. If that is too much for now, a level 1 pyramid costs only 81 ingots and already gives you Speed or Haste.

Mine iron around Y=16, where it is most common. Our Minecraft ore levels guide shows the best height for each ore. Smelt it in a blast furnace, which works about twice as fast as a regular furnace.

For the full amount, a Java iron farm gives a few hundred ingots an hour, depending on the design. A full pyramid then takes hours, not days.

How to Activate a Beacon in Minecraft

You do not light a beacon. It turns on by itself when a complete pyramid sits under it and nothing solid blocks the sky above it. Glass, water and bedrock do not block the beam, which is why beacons work under the Nether ceiling.

Any other solid block above it switches it off. Remove the block and it comes back on. A visible beam only means the beacon is active. You still have to choose a power.

How to Use and Power a Beacon in Minecraft

Right-click the beacon to open its menu (on Bedrock, use the interact button). Put one iron ingot, gold ingot, emerald, diamond or netherite ingot in the slot. Which one you use makes no difference. Then pick a primary power on the left and click the green checkmark. The item is used up and the effect starts.

A level 4 pyramid adds a secondary slot on the right. Choose Regeneration there, or pick your primary power again to raise it to Level II. You get one of the two, not both. To change powers later, repeat the steps with a new payment item.

Minecraft Beacon Effects by Pyramid Level

Each level keeps the powers from the one below, so a level 3 pyramid gives you all five primary powers.

Effect

Unlocks at

Best for

Speed

Level 1

Moving around a big base faster

Haste

Level 1

Faster mining and attacking

Resistance

Level 2

Taking less damage in fights

Jump Boost

Level 2

Tall builds and rough terrain

Strength

Level 3

Dealing more melee damage at mob farms

Regeneration

Level 4 (secondary)

Recovering health during long sessions

No single power wins everywhere, so pick the best beacon effect for what you do near it. For a mine, Haste is the usual choice. At level 4, you then decide between Haste II and Haste I with Regeneration. One beacon cannot give you both.

Minecraft Beacon Range and Effect Duration

In Java Edition, range and duration grow with the pyramid level:

Pyramid level

Range

Effect duration

1

20 blocks

11 seconds

2

30 blocks

13 seconds

3

40 blocks

15 seconds

4

50 blocks

17 seconds

The beacon refreshes its effects every 4 seconds, so you never run out while you stand inside the range. The range is a square column, not a sphere. Place it carefully if you want to use it underground.

The effect reaches far above the beacon, but only as far down as the range value. For a deep mine, build the beacon low, not on the surface. A low simulation distance can also cut off the outer edges of a big range.

How to Change the Beacon Beam Color

The beam is white by default. Put stained glass or stained glass panes anywhere above the beacon and it takes on that color. If you place the glass directly on the beacon, hold Shift while you right click. A plain right click opens the beacon menu instead.

The first piece of glass sets the color, and each piece above it blends in. So the order changes the result. Do not use tinted glass here. It cannot be dyed and it blocks the beam.

Why Is My Beacon Not Working?

Start with the pyramid, then the sky, then the power you picked.

Problem

Likely cause

Fix

No beam

A solid block above it, a missing block in a layer, or wrong blocks such as coal, lapis, redstone or copper

Clear the space above, fill every layer (corners too) and use iron, gold, emerald, diamond or netherite

Cannot pick a power

Pyramid level too low

Resistance and Jump Boost need level 2, Strength needs level 3, the secondary power needs level 4

Beam works, but you get no effect

No power chosen, or you are out of range

Add a payment item, confirm, and stand inside the range

Effects stopped after working

A pyramid block was broken

Repair it. Your power returns without paying again

Effects cut off near the edge

Low simulation distance

Raise it in your settings

Java vs Bedrock Beacon Differences

The recipe, pyramid sizes, block counts and powers are the same in both editions. Bedrock beacons can also be waterlogged and can conduct redstone power. Java beacons cannot.

Sources disagree on exact Bedrock range and duration, though some report one extra block of range to the north and west and one second less duration.

Test it in your own world if your build depends on it. Not sure which edition you play? Our Java vs Bedrock comparison explains the bigger differences.

Conclusion

A Minecraft beacon needs three things: a Nether Star from the Wither, a complete pyramid and an open sky. Craft it with 5 glass, 3 obsidian and the star, then pick a power for the spot where you spend your time. Haste suits a mine, Speed suits a base and Strength suits a mob farm.

You do not need the full pyramid at first. A level 1 pyramid costs 81 iron ingots and gives you Speed or Haste. Add layers later, up to 1,476 ingots at level 4 for 50 blocks of range and a secondary power. If it stops working, check for a solid block above it, a gap in the pyramid and a power you have not confirmed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do two beacons with the same power stack?

No. If two beacons give you the same effect, you only get the stronger one. To get more powers at once, give each beacon a different power.

Does a beacon affect mobs, animals or villagers?

No. Beacon effects work on players only.

Does a beacon work underground, underwater or in the Nether?

Yes, as long as the pyramid is complete and nothing solid blocks the sky above it. Water does not block the beam, and neither does bedrock, so beacons work under the Nether ceiling. Underground, dig a clear shaft up to the surface.

How do you get Haste II from a beacon?

Build a level 4 pyramid. Open the menu, pick Haste as your primary power, then pick Haste again in the secondary slot to raise it to Level II.

Can you pick up and move a beacon?

Yes. Mine it with any tool or by hand, then place it again. Pistons cannot push or pull a beacon.
